HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM PESTS THIS WINTER

technical • Nov 23, 2020
We often see and talk about all the pests we see during the summer - rodents, wasps, spiders and ants scurrying off with your summer food; but what about those winter pests that we don’t always see but are trying to get into our homes because the weather is cold and they just want to find a warm place to live with food, water and shelter. While we can empathize with their wants, there are still a lot of reasons why we don’t want pests in our homes. They can damage the property - leading to much bigger costs, they can spread germs and diseases and they can just be downright freaky! Here are a couple of tips to prepare your house and send those pests packing for an Airbnb elsewhere this winter.

SEAL OFF ANY ENTRY POINTS: Often there are pest and rodent entry points to our house that we don’t even think of. You know you have a dryer vent outside, but did you know that it is also common entry point for rodents to get in if it is not sealed correctly. Especially in winter when they are seeking warmth!

OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE: All those fall leaves are beautiful; but they can create a nice habitat for bugs and rodents if they are not cleaned up. Trees and vegetation touching your house can also create a superhighway for pests to enter your home. Keeping everything trimmed and off the house will help keep them at bay. You will also want to make sure there is no wood piled up against your house, this gives wood destroying insects and rodents close access to enter your home.

KEEP THE INSIDE CLEAN: Rodents are in search of not only warmth, but food and water as well. If they find access to these resources they will keep coming back and bring their friends and family. Keep food in sealed containers, don’t eat in all areas of the house, sweep, mop and vacuum frequently.

MOISTURE CONTROL: Because rodents are searching for warmth and water they can be drawn to bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements and attics. Bathrooms and laundry rooms can have moisture buildup from hot showers or baths and laundry rooms from washers and dryers. Make sure the ventilation in these rooms is working properly. For basements and attics, make sure there are no leaks or cracks where water can get in, creating a nice little place for rodents to spend the winter.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL: A lot of these tasks can seem daunting. If you are unsure of what you need to do, Morgan’s Pest Management can help you identify any points of entry that need to be fixed. Since we are trained professionals they will often see things that we don’t think of. Insects and rodents can fit through some of the smallest holes and cracks, so having a second opinion is a great idea and could save your home from incurring costly damage.

While these steps are important to preventing pests and rodents from invading your home, they don’t always help if you already have a problem. If you are already dealing with rats, mice or insect pests, Morgan’s Pest Management should be your number one priority. In addition to the damage that pests and rodents can cause to your home, spider bites can be dangerous and rodents can also carry diseases that are hazardous to humans and pets.
